Ridgid 18V Right Angle Impact Wrench - Pro Tool Reviews

Professional Tool Reviews for Pros

Ridgid has quite the spread when it comes to fastening tools, and impact wrenches are among the most commonly used in the brand’s lineup. The problem with the traditional impact wrench design is that they’re a little bulky, which makes it hard to get into tighter areas, like engine bays. To help alleviate this pain point, Ridgid introduced two 18V Right Angle Impact Wrenches to their subcompact brushless lineup. Impact Wrench Deals

The R8720B and R8721B right-angle impact wrenches feature 3/8-inch and 1/2-inch drives, respectively. Their performance specs are identical, with up to 250 ft-lbs of breakaway torque, an impact rate of 3,800 IPM, and a top speed of 3,200 RPMs thanks to their brushless motor.

The variable speed trigger also lets you dial in your speeds for the application at hand. Even more, there are three primary speed settings to choose from and an Auto Mode to prevent over tightening. The Auto Mode also works in reverse, delivering the full breakaway torque and then automatically stopping once the bolt is loosened.

So, what’s the nature of deployment for a right angle impact wrench? For us, this tool rides the line between an impact wrench and a cordless ratchet. It has significantly more speed and torque than a cordless ratchet, so it’s well suited for tackling stubborn nuts and bolts. Additionally, its slim profile allows you to access hard to reach spaces where a traditional impact wrench simply won’t fit. However, if you’re primarily working with small fasteners, we’d still recommend you reach for a ratchet to avoid over-tightening or potentially stripping threads.

As mentioned above, this tool is available with either 1/2-inch or 3/8-inch anvil. With a sub-compact, inline design, this tool weighs a modest 3.1 pounds as a bare tool and 4.1 pound with a 2.0Ah Max Output battery. Additionally, it’s 17 inches in length and the head measures 2.4 inches from front to back, not including the anvil. In spite of its overall length, Ridgid tells us this is the most compact right-angle impact wrench in its class, even more so than the Milwaukee M12 2564!

The right angle impact wrench features a two-finger trigger and Ridgid’s cushioned hex grip for a little extra comfort. The forward/reverse switch and mode selector button are positioned within reach of your thumb and index finger for easy access. This lets you change your drive speed and direction without ever removing your hand from the tool.

Both the 1/2-inch and 3/8-inch models retail for $199 as bare tools. There are currently no kit options at the time we’re writing this, however, these tools are compatible with all Ridgid 18V batteries. Ridgid backs your purchase with a 3-year warranty and a Lifetime Service Agreement upon registration.

After getting a little hands-on time with the Ridgid R8721, it’s easy to see why this would appeal to Pros and serious automotive enthusiasts. It delivers a solid blend of speed and power without all the extra bulk and weight you get from a full-sized impact wrench. If you’ve been looking to ditch your pneumatic tools and make the switch to a cordless option, the Ridgid 18V Right Angle Impact Wrenches are right up your alley.
