Clear the clutter with these gorgeous options. Oval Coffee Table
Clear the clutter in your hallway, bedroom or living room with a practical storage bench. The perfect dual-purpose furniture, a storage bench offers both streamlined storage and seating.
Whether it's for storing shoes, toys or accessories, storage benches are designed with storage space underneath and a seating area on top (sometimes with a cushion for extra comfort). If you want something more concealed, opt for a storage ottoman bench which will keep your belongings tucked neatly out of sight.
Where can I put a storage bench?
'Benches work in areas that might need slim furniture. So, a hallway or vestibule,' says Carl Morenikeji, director of Scaramanga. 'Old school benches are ideal for organising shoes and other kids' stuff.'
You can also make good use of a storage bench in your bedroom, using it to store bed linens, soft furnishings, and seasonal items.
What is the difference between a storage bench and an ottoman?
Whilst an ottoman can be a storage bench, a storage bench isn't always an ottoman. Elena Mellowes, head of buying at Oak Furnitureland, explains: 'An ottoman is usually a fixed and often elongated piece of upholstered furniture, whereas a storage bench, as implied in the name, incorporates a handy element of storage that’s usually captured by a lift-up top.
'While both pieces can lend themselves to creating additional seating – ottomans usually in living spaces and storage benches in the bedroom or hallway – it's the addition of storage which predominantly defines the two choices.'
How do I style a storage bench?
It all comes down to use – will you use it largely for sitting, or is it more important to have easy access to the storage compartment? Either way, you'll still want to consider the overall look and level of comfort. Elena suggests: 'When styling your storage bench or blanket box, the perfect styling notes would be the addition of a cosy throw, loosely thrown over the bench.
'Try opting for a texture such as a herringbone weave, or perhaps a colour to give a contrast to the bench itself. Crucially, it needs to be styled with an accessory that won't impact you accessing what's inside the bench!'
