Plug Power has started production at what it says is the largest electrolytic hydrogen production plant and electrolyser deployment currently operating in the US. Laser Gas
Located in Woodbine, Georgia, and developed in 18 months, the plant is designed to produce 15 tonnes per day of liquid electrolytic hydrogen. This output is achieved with eight 5MW PEM electrolysers.
Once produced, the hydrogen is then condensed into liquid form for delivery to customers.
Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug Power, described the start-up as a historic milestone for both the company and the hydrogen ecosystem.
He continued, “Bringing this green hydrogen plant online demonstrates that we are the leading builder of global hydrogen for supporting customer demand in decarbonising their operations.”
For over a year, Plug Power has been operating a pilot gaseous hydrogen plant in Georgia using Plug’s 5MW electrolyser platform to support high-pressure tube trailer filling for itself and its customers.
It was announced in August 2023 that Governor Brian P. Kemp had instructed the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to start working with private sector partners on how best to approach the deployment of hydrogen fuelling stations for commercial vehicles in the state.
As a first step, GDOT issued a Request for Information (RFI) to seek feedback from businesses operating in the space on how to progress in the development and construction of hydrogen fuel stations.
With the feedback, GDOT hopes to better understand opportunities to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles.
If Georgia commits to the deployment of hydrogen stations, plants, such as the one developed by Plug Power, could help the state deliver hydrogen to those that require it.
Beyond Georgia, Plug Power is also developing other US-based plants in Louisiana, New York, and Texas.
Decarbonisation Summit 2024: Industrial Gases and Clean Energies 3.0 The global industrial gas and equipment business has an imperative role to play in the future of clean fuels and decarbonisation. The energy transition simply won’t happen without it. At the same time, the industry has its own activities to decarbonise and circular economies to carve out – think green air gases and bio-based carbon dioxide (CO2), as well as CO2 utilisation and e-fuels, and so much more besides. There are pathways to progress and questions to answer on this journey, not least:What are the compelling clean fuels and what do the pathways to production look like? How can the gases industry participate in this playground of opportunities? What can other alternative fuels mean for the CO2 industry and its stakeholders? These questions and more will be in the spotlight at gasworld’s Decarbonisation Summit in April 2024. Interested in speaking and contributing?
