Whether you find yourself in need of some comfortable walking shoes to get through cold weather days or are tired of walking barefoot at home, a quality pair of slippers may be just what you need. And according to a podiatrist we spoke with, the best slippers feature soft cushioning that may help alleviate foot pain.
"Walking barefoot at home, especially on tile floors, can cause foot pain and even lead to problems, such as heel pain and plantar fasciitis," says Suzanne C. Fuchs, a board-certified podiatrist at Luxe Podiatry. "Slippers can provide the necessary support, stability, and cushioning needed in order to help prevent and treat these conditions."
So if you're in the market for some seriously cozy house slippers, we've got you covered. We consulted with Fuchs and tested a bunch of great slip-ons, from ones with tons of padding, to picks that are loaded with insulating fabrics to keep your toes cozy this winter. Read on for our favorite picks.
Meet The Expert: Suzanne C. Fuchs, a board-certified Florida-based podiatrist at Luxe Podiatry.
Have you ever truly lived if you don't own at least one pair of Dearfoams slippers? Here's another pick you'll love. The Fireside Moccasin slippers are equipped with a proprietary fabric that adjusts to your body’s temperature to prevent sweaty feet. They also excel at moisture-wicking, thanks to their all-natural sheepskin fibers.
These slippers have a timeless moccasin design and are lined with real Australian shearling at a wallet-friendly price. The rubber soles offer extra traction if you venture outdoors and the stitching adds cute style detailing that sets these slippers apart from more basic options.
Rave Review: “The fur is cozy and my feet stay at a comfortable temperature without sweating—or maybe the fur wicks away sweat? I’ve had another pair for about a year and they do not smell like a stinky, sweaty shoe. There's no odor at all.”
Back with another Vionic pick because the brand knows what they're doing when it comes to comfy shoes. The Gemma Mule Slippers should def be in your cart if you experience heel pain. Fuchs likes that they have “lots of cushioning for shock absorption,” thanks to their flexible EVA midsole. They are also designed to fit most arches.
Like most Vionic models, these shoes come in over a dozen colors (21, to be precise), so you can grab a pair to match every outfit. They have a Velcro strap across the top that adjusts to hug your foot without digging in or flopping around.
Rave Review: “I struggle with plantar fasciitis, tarsal tunnel syndrome, and poor perception in my feet. I need to wear a slipper with a hard sole, but often can't find one with the kind of support I need. This product really came in clutch as something I can slip on and feel comfortable in while keeping my feet happy and in less pain!"

If you’re looking for a pair of hassle-free slippers, look no further than the Sanuk Cozy Vibe Low. They take convenience a step further with their collapsible heel which makes them easy to slide on (no bending over necessary!).
Gomez loves these slippers for their cozy and secure feel. "On those days in the winter I don't feel like throwing actual shoes on, I love throwing on these slippers from Sanuk for a put-together, but effortless look," she says. "The fleece keeps my feet warm even when the temps are lower." Her only caveat is that her wider feet makes them a little harder to slip on. "Sometimes I have to shimmy my feet in there to get them completely on, which can often take a few minutes," she says.
These slippers have a classic fuzzy ankle collar made from a durable and warm wool blend. The lining is made from a wool and tencel blend that's cushioning, warm, and moisture-wicking, so your feet won't get sweaty if things warm up.
Rave Review: "I love these shoes. They're warm and have a squishy feel when you walk. It's like you're stepping on marshmallows. They fit snugly, but not tight."
The Indulge Relax slippers are designed for indoor and outdoor use. They's also great for flat feet. "The slippers provide arch support, cushion, and stability [and are] great for low arches and normal foot types," says Fuchs. Plus, the footbed is treated with an anti-bacterial and odor-resistant treatment to keep your feet feeling clean and fresh.
Several reviewers with foot pain say these shoes helped alleviate or relieve their conditions. "I am diagnosed with tarsal tunnel syndrome," wrote one tester. They're very comfortable to walk in and help ease my foot pain." One thing to note is that some customers said the shoes do have a breaking-in period.
The plush Velcro straps across the tops of the shoes make them fully adjustable to your foot shape and size, so you don't have to worry about your slippers, well, slipping.
Rave Review: “This open-toe slipper was a great option for my mom due to her hammertoe pain. I'm going to order myself a pair!”
Slippers that come in extra wide sizes aren’t as common as they should be. Luckily, Orthofeet makes an excellent pair. These slippers come in inclusive sizing—regular, wide, and extra wide options.
They're also designed with cushy insoles that offer shock absorption and may help alleviate pain for those who suffer from hammertoes, arthritis, Achilles tendons, and other foot conditions.
These faux fur-lined clogs have an adjustable Velcro strap for secure footing and a raised lip at the heel helps keep your foot extra secure. They come in three color options and sizes 5 to 12.
Rave Review: “I love these. They are my second pair. They're extremely comfortable and supportive. I experienced severe metatarsal pad pain in one foot and [was] unable to walk barefoot due to pain. I wore these straight out of [the] box—no pain. The support is that good."
These Birkenstock slippers come with a molded footbed to accommodate your arch and are designed with wool construction that keeps your feet super warm. The shoes also feature a soft lining that helps wick away moisture.
These fuzzy slides come in three neutral colors have narrow size options. They have the signature Birkenstock rounded toe box and highly durable design, so you can shuffle around indoors in pure comfort or trek outside for the mail in a snowstorm in these hardy clogs (they're named after the Swiss mountain for a reason, after all).
Rave Review: “These are great cold weather slippers. They are very durable and offer good support. I have washed mine once so far with no problems."
Coziness is an essential part of most slippers, but not every brand does cozy like Dearfoams. If you’re looking for super comfy slippers, these shoes may be exactly what you need, thanks to all of the fluffy faux sherpa they're made with. Another plus: They can be machine-washed.
These booties fully encompass your foot and ankle for maximum warmth. They have a dreamy memory foam insole that envelopes your foot like a warm hug. The pull-on slippers have four color options and are budget-friendly, making them a great choice for a gift.
Rave Review: ”So cozy and comfy! I have two pairs and wear them all of the time in the house, since my feet get cold if I don't. I have hard floors and these make it feel like I'm walking on carpet.”
These slippers will make you feel as though you’re walking on a cloud, since they are made with 100 percent wool. Plus, the decorative stitching on the water-resistant suede provides an elevated look, making them perfect for running quick errands in style.
These slides come in 15 color options, ranging from classic chestnut to an eye-catching "purple ruby." Though they don't come in half sizes, the brand recommends rounding up if you're between sizes, and most customers seem to be able to find the right fit for them.
With over 18,000 five-star reviews on Amazon, customers love these shoes for their style, functionality, and comfort. Reviewers say they're easy to slip on and off and that they're warm and supportive on cooler, dry days. On the flipside, customers also warn that the shoes tend to stretch the more you wear them, which is something to keep in mind when figuring out sizing.
Rave Review: “I needed something to keep my feet warm in the coldest weather and these UGGs fit the bill. The sole is great, grippy, and non-skid. They fit well with a slight give to them after a few wearings, but don’t get sloppy and loose. Love these slippers.”
The most functional slippers on this list, these babies double up as ankle socks and slippers. They're designed with a cushioned footbed, a soft, fuzzy interior lining, and grips on their bottoms to keep you from slipping. These slippers are a hot commodity, so check back often since they tend to frequently go in and out of stock.
A favorite of commerce editor Jasmine Gomez, she loves wearing these slippers to lounge around the house. "I usually wear these while I cook or take care of other low-lift chores around the house," she says. "They allow me to easily move between catching my show on the couch to checking if the food is done yet." After a while, they can start to feel a bit snug, though, she says. "I have a bunion on one foot, so if I leave them on too long, my foot starts to feel a little tight and bothered, but that happens to me with most socks and shoes."
These slipper-socks come in four colorways, including a classic navy and a loud, funky orange and blue pattern. As with every purchase at Bombas, you're also doing good. The brand donates a pair of socks to homeless shelters for every purchase.
Rave Review: "These were gifted to me and I wear them all the time! They keep my feet warm and they pack small for travel. Love these gripper slippers!"
If Lululemon gets you through your most intense workouts, let its slippers get you through recovery, too. These supportive slippers made with dual-density cushioning were designed to comfort sore feet. Made with head-to-toe rubber traction, the slides are also incredibly grippy.
These delicate slip-on shoes come in six color options, including a pretty place Strawberry Milkshake and your classic all-black. With a cushioned sole and a foam-lined strap, it's hard to find a more comfortable and durable slipper for rest days.
Rave Review: "Honestly the best slides ever! I have bought all different brands of slides and these are by far my favorite! I’ve bought three different colors so far and am excited for more."
If you’re looking for shoes you can wear to and from the shower or whenever your feet just need some air, look no further than the Rosyclo Cloud Slippers. These non-slip slippers are designed to be quick-drying and waterproof, so it's totally fine if they get a little wet.
These affordable slides put the fun in functionality, with dozens of color options and a thick, bouncy sole, you'll feel like you're walking on air.
Rave Review: “They are supportive on my feet and aren't slippery when they get wet in the shower. Our only complaint is that they do squeak a bit when they get wet."
There are several factors to consider when looking for the perfect pair of slippers. In addition to checking the reviews, it is important to keep certain aspects of the material, fit, and style in mind.
With so many different kinds of slippers out there, it's a good idea to take a careful look at what materials they're designed with to choose those that are the best for you.
If you struggle from foot pain, for example, Fuchs recommends looking for a pair of slippers with a good “EVA midsole for shock absorption.” Slippers that absorb impact (shock absorption) work “to reduce stress and strain in the feet, ankles, and back," she explains.
Also, if you're looking for something you'll be using in wet conditions, like in the shower, then make sure what you're buying is waterproof. Rubber and plastic options are your best bet here, as cotton, shearling, and wool shoes will absorb water and are slower to dry.
Speaking of drying, many of us want warm slippers, but no one wants feet that overheat and turn clammy. Opt for natural fibers like cotton and real wool, which are breathable and will better regulate your body temperature.
Although slippers may be thought of as a more comfortable and casual shoe, making sure they fit properly is still important. That means doing your best to avoid soles with a slippery feel. "Slippers should have a nice fit and your feet should not be moving around too much," Fuchs says. "If slippers are causing corns, calluses, or even blisters, they do not fit properly or provide adequate support,” she adds. All in all, what matters is that the slippers you're buying feel good on your feet.
One way to avoid slippery slippers to to choose a pair with an adjustable strap that you can secure tightly around your foot and/or a lip in the back that holds your heel in place.
When it comes to style, the slippers you buy will depend on your preferences. From minimalist designs to platform shoes with lots of fluff, like these UGGs, there are so many slippers out there that you'll have no problem finding something you like aesthetically.
